Over the last several years, I have certainly developed a designer crush on milliner and accessories designer Eugenia Kim, (as evidenced here, here, here, and more). Not only do I love her designs, but as a businesswoman myself, I admire her business success. So, when she and I met over breakfast in Paris recently, I, of course, had to ask her how she started her business. And, boy, was it a great story!

There’s always a silver lining.

Well, after receiving an extremely bad haircut in 1998, Eugenia Kim did just that! She created a bold, eye-catching feathered cloche to disguise the bad haircut. Immediately, two things happened: (1) she discovered her love for and talent in millinery design, and (2) local NYC boutique owners were instantly inquiring about her unique head wear. Out of that bad hair cut, a business was born!

As they say, the rest is history. Major attention from luxury department stores and online retailers followers. In fact, in 2004, Eugenia was awarded the “Accessories Designer of the Year” designation by the CFDA. While the label now includes shoes, scarves, and more, the focus still remains on the innovative approach to headwear. She uses only the finest of materials and hand craftsmanship. In addition, Eugenia manages to marry timeless designs with modern touches.

During the day, we had the chance to discuss many things, including what a moment hats are having for women.
