Denim Midi Skirts

Denim midi skirts. Have you been noticing them? I sure have. Designers and high street labels alike are embracing the trend.

Here are 5 reasons to try denim midi skirts today.

Side note – let it be known that fashion icon Olivia Palermo called this trend a full year ago. She was definitely on to something, as the skirts are popping up everywhere right now! Speaking of her, did you notice she was sporting this same top I’m wearing here last week at the People Style Watch party celebrating her being on the cover of the new September issue?

The top is by Johanna Ortiz – an emerging designer from Colombia, whose breezy, effortless, feminine pieces are taking the fashion world by storm. This ‘Tulum’ off the shoulder top has been particularly popular. Besides Olivia wearing it last week, fashion “it girl” Lauren Santo Domingo has also been spotted recently wearing the top. While it is currently out of stock, keep an eye out here for it to be restocked.

Back to the subject of the denim midi skirt trend… The look that is hot right now is the A-line version of the skirt. Here are five reasons you need to be rocking this look:

1. It’s versatile

This truly is a key transitional piece as we move from summer to fall. More than any other piece, this skirt can be worn throughout the seasons.

For now, I’m wearing the skirt two ways: (1) with an off the shoulder top and strappy sandals, as you see here, and (2) with a striped tee shirt and sneakers.

For fall, I can’t wait to pair it with a chunky cable-knit sweater and tall suede boots.

2. It’s comfortable

It’s denim. Need we say more? Imagine the fabric of your most comfy pair of jeans combined with a less constricting silhouette – i.e., a skirt that floats away from the body versus fitted jeans. It’s a genius idea, really.

3. It’s flattering

A-line skirts always have a magically flattering effect. The fitted waist nips you in at your smallest section and then effortlessly floats away from your body, giving you curves in all the right places. The length of this midi A-line just amplifies those effects.

4. It’s elongating

Some might argue this point, saying that the length can be a bit awkward. I disagree, though. If you get the length right, this style has the power to make your figure appear taller.

What is the right length, you might ask? For petite frames, the skirt should hit just below the knee. For those on the taller side, you can let that hemline hit a bit lower. For an extra lengthening effect, go ahead and unbutton buttons at the bottom to show more leg.

5. It’s an accessible trend

That’s right – there’s something for everyone’s budget! From $50 to $400, we’ve found great options for every price point. Don’t worry – we’ve found more on the affordable end of the spectrum than the high end.

This looks great! I have a denim skirt that’s a tiny bit longer than knee length, I love it too. The shorter ones can tend to look a little early-2000s, can’t they?
